Probe of elections resignation asked

MIAMI, June 15 (UPI) -- The state of Florida has rejected a request to investigate the resignation of an elections official accused of lying about a voting machine flaw.

The request was filed by Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., and rejected by Republican Attorney General Charlie Crist, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Wexler said Ed Kast, former head of the state Division of Elections, lied under oath regarding his knowledge of a software problem with the state's touch-screen machines. Kast resigned last week.

Crist pointed out Wexler has filed two lawsuits against the state regarding the voting machines, and "any continuing concerns you have should be addressed before the courts."

The state and federal court suits demand the state's 15 largest counties requiring the machines also provide paper records.

The state suit has been dismissed and is under appeal.

Wexler claimed Kast testified in a hearing of the lawsuit that he knew of the problems with a paper trail in May. Wexler said Kast had been notified in March.
