U.K. panel to probe Gulf War Syndrome

LONDON, June 14 (UPI) -- The Royal British Legion plans an independent inquiry into Gulf War syndrome, the Independent reported Monday.

Lord Morris of Manchester, who is honorary parliamentary adviser to the legion, announced a team to study the range of unexplained illnesses suffered by soldiers who served in the conflict 14 years ago.

The government does not support the new investigation.

"We do not believe that a public inquiry is appropriate at this time," a defense ministry spokesman said Monday.

"Any scientific research is likely to be able to answer the basic question of why some Gulf veterans are ill."
