Thai teachers want guns

VIENTIANE, Laos, June 13 (UPI) -- A thousand Thai teachers want guns to protect themselves from Muslim militants, the Bangkok Post reported during the weekend.

About 1,000 teachers in the Yala region of southern Thailand have already "applied for permission to buy and carry firearms to protect themselves" from insurgents, the newspaper said.

The Post said the call was an organized one from the Yala Teachers Confederation and it followed a meeting of teachers in the region in response to an attack Thursday on a school in the nearby Kapho district.

The meeting "agreed local administration agencies should set up a working group to enable purchase of guns for teachers," the paper said.
