Suit targets Reno, Nev., apartments

WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- The Justice Department has filed suit against the officials of a Reno., Nev., apartment complex for alleged discrimination against the disabled.

The suit announced Friday targets the developer, builder, architect, civil engineer and owners of the Sharlands Terrace Apartments.

It alleges the defendants designed and constructed the apartment complex without features required to permit access to people with disabilities.

The complaint said the violations include steps that block access, doors that are too narrow for wheelchairs, electrical outlets and thermostats too high on walls for people in wheelchairs to reach them and kitchens and bathrooms that limit the mobility of those in wheelchairs.

The suit was referred to the Justice Department by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status (having children under 18 years old), national origin, and disability.
