SANAA, Yemen, June 4 (UPI) -- A Yemen opposition party complained Friday against the demolishing of houses near the palace gate of President Ali Abudllah Saleh's son, Ahmed.
The Tagamoo Party for Reforms said on its Web site that the Public Works Department had demolished several houses in the vicinity of the palace of Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, the commander of the Republican Guards.
"Attempts to contact the president's son to complain about the measure which displaced dozens of people were in vain," the party said.
It said the displaced citizens addressed a letter to the president seeking his immediate intervention to stop the Public Works Department from destroying additional houses.
"We implore you to interfere to settle this matter in order to protect us from losing our shelters ... We have committed no crime except residing in the vicinity of your son's palace," the letter said, according to the opposition party.
It said the houses were demolished under the pretext of building a road, which later turned out to be a private alleyway leading to the palace gate.
