Texas storm toll at least $100 million

DALLAS, June 3 (UPI) -- More than 280,000 homes remained without power Thursday from two days of howling storms, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The storms had winds whipping at 80-90 mph and large hail. They washed the area with as much as 3 inches of rain in some counties, causing flooding.

Preliminary estimates of losses stand around $100 million, said Sandra Ray, public affairs director for the Southwestern Insurance Information Service.

One tornado sighting in Fort Worth was confirmed by the National Weather Service, but its 60 mph winds were less than the straight-line gusts that buffeted the city, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said.

The Fort Worth area was bracing for the possibility of more thunderstorms through Friday morning, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, the TXU Electric Delivery utility had 3,000 repair people on the job, including some borrowed from Oklahoma and Louisiana.
