Jimmy Hoffa disappearance case revives

DETROIT, June 2 (UPI) -- Detroit area prosecutors may subpoena suspects in the 1975 disappearance of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, the Free Press reported Wednesday.

Their renewed interest stems from the publication Tuesday of a biography of a Philadelphia Teamster and hit man in which he admits luring Hoffa to a house in Detroit and shooting him in the back of the head.

Now Oakland County's Prosecutor David Gorcyca wants to question suspects in the case. He is meeting with the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office to discuss whether to subpoena the suspects to testify before a federal grand jury.

Gorcyca also says it may be appropriate to grant surviving suspects immunity in exchange for their truthful testimony about how Hoffa disappeared because of the slim chance of ever getting enough evidence to prosecute.

Investigators say they believe Detroit Mafia captain Anthony Giacalone and Anthony Provenzano, a New Jersey Teamsters official, had Hoffa killed by Provenzano henchmen Gabriel and Salvatore Briguglio and Stephen and Thomas Andretta, and that Hoffa's foster son Charles (Chuckie) O'Brien may have driven Hoffa to the scene of his death.

O'Brien, Briguglio and Andretta are alive, though the whereabouts of the last two are unknown.
