Nader may win Greens' seat

WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- Independent candidate Ralph Nader has been featured in polls for weeks, but has yet to secure the presidential nomination for the U.S. Green Party.

The Green Party said Thursday that consumer advocate Nader would likely face off with David Cobb, a Texas native and longtime party activist, for the spot on the party's ballot line.

So far Cobb is in the lead with 158 of a possible 835 nominations, but the party said several candidates have declared their support -- and their delegates -- to Nader, making it possible he could win the nomination.

The Green National Convention is scheduled for June 23-28 in Milwaukee, and so far has qualified for ballots in 23 states.

Nader's role in the 2004 election has been highly controversial among Democrats, many of whom blame him for siphoning off votes in the 2000 election. Independent groups have sprung up in recent weeks to campaign against Nader's candidacy, but he repeatedly has refused to drop from the race.
