Ex-Dole campaign official sentenced

WASHINGTON, May 26 (UPI) -- A former aide to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C.'s presidential campaign was sentenced to 18 months in prison Wednesday for stealing from the campaign.

Earl Allen Haywood, a former assistant treasurer for Dole campaign committees, pleaded guilty March 17 to mail fraud.

In addition to the prison sentence, a federal judge ordered Haywood to repay the Dole campaign.

In his guilty plea, Haywood admitted to stealing approximately $174,725 from the 2002 Dole campaign through several schemes.

From early 2002 through mid-2003, Haywood served as an assistant treasurer for The Dole North Carolina Victory Committee Inc., which raised money for both the Elizabeth Dole for U.S. Senate Committee Inc. and the North Carolina Republican Party.

During the same time period, he also served as the assistant treasurer for North Carolina's Salute to George W. Bush Committee Inc., which raised money for three entities: Elizabeth Dole for U.S. Senate Committee Inc., the North Carolina Republican Party and Robin Hayes for Congress.
