TBILISI, Georgia, May 25 (UPI) -- Human rights activists in Tbilisi protested against the alleged practice of torture in Georgian prisons Tuesday, the Interfax news agency reported.
Members of non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, in the remote Caucasus republic on the Black Sea held a protest rally outside the nation's Interior Ministry to demand that the alleged torture of detainees in the country's prisons be stopped, Interfax said.
Human rights activist Nina Kakabadze told Interfax that her group had documented the torture of least 50 prisoners within the past three months. "The Interior Ministry is now a much more closed structure" than it was under former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze "and it is practically impossible to get objective information from there," she said.
