Powell: Sudan factions close to deal

WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday rival factions in Sudan were close to a peace deal.

"We are hopeful and optimistic that there might be some signings tomorrow," he told reporters after a meeting with Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel.

Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Taha and rebel leader John Garang are meeting in Lake Naivasha, Kenya, to hammer out a deal that would end the fighting between the Muslim government in Khartoum and Christian and Animist minorities in the south of the country.

The two sides have been close to an agreement before.
