British parliament security lax

LONDON, May 24 (UPI) -- Security at Britain's Parliament has deteriorated to where police are being told not to search the guests of Parliament members, says a report.

The breaches were condoned by the MPs and peers, the Scotsman reported Monday.

The report said they may have contributed to the security failure that allowed protesters to throw missiles at Prime Minister Tony Blair in the chamber of the House of Commons last Wednesday.

The newspaper said it found Blair was unable to take his personal bodyguards into the house on grounds they have no authority in the security hierarchy led by Speaker Michael Martin.

Police said until the Wednesday incident, they were frequently forbidden from searching the members' guests.

The incident has prompted a major review of the security.
