Kirchner: Energy crisis caused by growth

BUENOS AIRES, May 20 (UPI) -- Argentine President Nestor Kirchner Thursday blamed the nation's energy crisis on its economic growth in recent months.

"Growth always brings with it problems and crisis," Kirchner said.

However problems caused by Argentina's energy shortage extend beyond its borders.

Earlier this week, Argentine Minister of Interior Anibal Fernandez defended his nation's decision to limit natural gas supplies to Chile and admitted there is no end in sight to the crisis.

Argentina cut gas supplies to Chile by 20 percent in April due to the increasing demand at home while the nation emerges from years of economic recession.

Chile is concerned power rationing may be the only solution though an uncomfortable one, particularly as winter approaches in the southern hemisphere.
