Honduran prison fire kills over 100

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras, May 17 (UPI) -- At least 102 inmates were killed in a prison fire in northern Honduras, prison officials said Monday.

"The corpses are still being counted at this very moment," said Vice Minister of Security Armando Calidonio. "The situation is grave and being investigated."

According to La Prensa newspaper, 27 people were seriously injured, many of them suffering from burns.

The blaze broke out early Monday morning and may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

The prison in the northern town of San Pedro Sula is reportedly overcrowded, housing 2,200 prisoners though has an intended capacity for 800.
