Wife says keep candidate's divorce private

CHICAGO, May 11 (UPI) -- Actress Jeri Ryan, the ex-wife of Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Jack Ryan, is fighting media attempts to open sealed records from their 1999 divorce.

A lawyer for Jeri Ryan, best known for playing a teacher on Fox TV's "Boston Public" and Seven of Nine, the human-Borg character on the syndicated "Star Trek: Voyager," said she recommends a referee appointed by a Los Angeles judge not unseal records about the custody fight over their son, the Chicago Tribune said.

Jack Ryan, a multimillionaire banker who won the Republican Senate nomination in the March primary, will face Democrat Barack Obama in November.

He said he had some 44 documents sealed in 2000 and 2001 to protect the welfare of his son. So far, Obama has not made whatever accusations were made during the Ryan's divorce a campaign issue.

The judge's decision on unsealing the divorce records is expected next month.
