Sierra Club endorses Kerry for president

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- The Sierra Club, a leading liberal environmental group, Tuesday endorsed the presidential bid of U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Sierra Club President Larry Fahn said Kerry will provide the environmental leadership that has been missing in the Bush White House.

Kerry's "commitment to environmental progress," Fahn continued, provides a meaningful contrast to what the group said was an "all-out assault on the environment" by the Bush administration.

The group also praised Kerry for his "environmental leadership throughout his career in public service," citing his work helping organize Massachusetts' first Earth Day in 1970 and his support for international accords intended to retard the spread of global warming pollution.

The endorsement was decided by volunteer members who serve on the club's political committee and board of directors. The Sierra Club said it will mobilize more than 700,000 members to talk to their friends and neighbors about supporting Kerry in November.
