More hearings to come in abuse scandal

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- As many as 10 more witnesses may be called by the Senate Armed Services Committee to testify in the prison abuse scandal, the committee chairman said Tuesday.

"I have eight or nine that should be brought up," Sen. John Warner, R-Va., told reporters between back to back hearing on the Iraqi abuse scandal.

Among them are likely to be Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith, who set policy regarding the treatment of detainees in Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay. An official from the International Committee of the Red cross may be called to testify to their findings at Abu Ghraib last fall, as might a representative of Paul Bremer, the American civilian administrator in Iraq. Warner also said someone from the State Department may be asked to testify, as would the Pentagon general counsel's office.

Ranking Democrat Michagan Sen. Carl Levin said he would like to hear from Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, Col. Thomas Pappas, and Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, all of whom are central figures in the case.

The committee will be tied up with the fiscal year 2005 defense authorization bill on the floor next week, and then there is a week-long recess. It could be two weeks before the next hearing, Warner said.

There were seven hours of hearings on Friday, followed by seven hours Tuesday.
