Gov. Romney hit from right on gay marriage

BOSTON, May 11 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who opposes efforts to legalize gay marriage, is now being criticized from the right for not being tough enough.

The Declaration Alliance, a conservative group led by former GOP presidential candidate Alan Keyes, is airing $40,000 worth of ads on Boston talk radio stations. The ads challenged Romney to back an effort to oust the four Massachusetts Supreme Court justices who ruled in favor of gay marriage last November.

The group plans to supplement the radio campaign with television spots urging listeners to call the governor's office and ask him to support impeaching the justices.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told the Boston Globe the governor did not intend to back the Alliance's effort. "We don't think the answer is to impeach the justices responsible for the Goodridge decision," he said. "That goes too far."
