WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- An antiwar coalition Monday filed a freedom of information act request for the release of photographs, videos, and reports about prisoner abuses in Iraq.
Act Now to Stop War & End Racism also requested the release of similar material about U.S. prison facilities in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"We filed this request ... because the government has a legal obligation not to conceal or cover-up criminal action that it has undertaken," said lawyer Mara Verheyden-Hilliard.
"The people of the United States have the right to learn the truth about U.S. military operations and the ... treatment of detainees in Iraq and elsewhere," she said.
She said the full release of the information would reveal that torture and humiliation of prisoners is not aberrational, but an institutionalized mechanism.
The coalition is also arranging a protest rally to be held in Washington June 5.
