Hyundai Motor head may be questioned

SEOUL, May 7 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in South Korea may question the chairman of Hyundai Motor Group about the company's illegal political donations in the 2002 presidential campaign.

Prosecutor Ahn Dai-hui told reporters in Seoul Friday Hyundai head Chung Mong-koois was currently visiting China on business but had promised to return if asked to appear for questioning, the Korea Times reported.

"We don't have any plan to question him as yet, but we may take action depending on how the situation unfolds," he said.

Hyundai Motor allegedly gave nearly $9.5 million in illegal funds to the Grand National Party, the report said.

The group has argued the money was the personal property of late Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung, but prosecutors believe this to be an excuse to avoid legal responsibility.

Ahn, who is leading the investigation, said all the lawmakers will be questioned by the end of next week.
