Saudi defense minister is hospitalized

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 1 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia said Saturday Defense Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz had been hospitalized for unidentified surgery.

The Saudi royal court issued a statement saying the minister would undergo a surgical procedure in the Saudi Red Sea port city of Jeddah.

Prince Sultan, brother of King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, is the longest-reigning defense minister in the world. He assumed his post in 1962 after serving as minister of transport and agriculture.

The prince underwent a number of knee surgeries during the past several years, the last of which was performed in a Switzerland hospital in 1997.
