Kerry campaign said lacking in key states

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John Kerry, the presumed Democratic presidential candidate, still has little campaign organization in some key states, party strategists say.

Not only is his campaign lacking in such pivotal states as Michigan and Pennsylvania, where pollsters see toss-up races with President Bush, but also in the South, Democratic officials told the Washington Times.

Some party strategists say they fear the Massachusetts senator will "write off" the South to focus his resources elsewhere in the country.

"I understand that Kerry is still putting his team together. That will take time to work out," said Don Morabito, the party's executive director in Pennsylvania and a campaign veteran.

Meanwhile, a number of groups in key states have mounted door-to-door canvassing operations and voter-registration drives on Kerry's behalf.

Bush's campaign boasts a state-by-state organization of volunteers across the country.
