Colombia mourns 21 dead children

BOGOTA, April 30 (UPI) -- Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe expressed the nation's sorrow during a national day of mourning for 21 children killed in a bus accident earlier this week.

In a memorial service Uribe said, "The entire nation and the families of the children killed are bearing a tremendous pain," El Espectador newspaper reported Friday.

On Wednesday, 21 children and one adult were killed when a bulldozer from a nearby construction site fell some 60 feet from a ledge on top of their bus. Dozens of children --ages 7 to 12 -- were saved by rescue workers, though many sustained various injuries.

Work on the site has been suspended pending an investigation into why the bulldozer fell from the ledge and into other safety hazards.
