Arrest in Louisiana serial slayings

BATON ROUGE, La., April 30 (UPI) -- A suspect was jailed Friday in Baton Rouge, La., after police said DNA evidence linked him to the serial slayings of three women.

Sean Vincent Gillis, 41, was arrested Thursday after a SWAT team stormed his home in Baton Rouge, the Advocate reported. He was booked on three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of mutilating their bodies.

Gillis was linked by DNA to the slayings of Katherine Hall, Johnnie Mae Williams and Donna Bennett Johnston in the past five years, said Sheriff's Lt. Col. Greg Phares. He said Gillis is a suspect in other unsolved murders.

Police said the victims had what they called "high-risk lifestyles." All three had been arrested for drugs, prostitution or both, according to court records obtained by the Advocate.

DNA was also used by Louisiana authorities in the search for the killer of several women in the Baton Rouge area in 2002 and 2003. Derrick Todd Lee, 35, was arrested a year ago in connection with those slayings and awaits trial.
