Confederate submariners commemorated

CHARLESTON, S.C., April 18 (UPI) -- Saturday's elaborate reenactment of a Confederate funeral in Charleston, S.C., honored some long-gone early submariners, not a universally respected group.

The bayonets, brass buttons and flags were taken out of storage to stage a funeral for the Confederate crew of the CSS Hunley, a hand-cranked and tiny submarine which allowed them to get within firing range of a Union ship -- before sinking.

Some black residents of Charleston compared the submarine attackers to terrorists who fought for a hated ideology, in this case, slavery. None of the black residents could be seen at the event which drew its crowds of Confederate army fans from throughout the South, the Washington Post reported.

Fourteen southern governors invited to the reenactment also passed on the invitation.
