U.N names 3 to oil-for-food inquiry panel

UNITED NATIONS, April 16 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has asked three people to join a panel investigating allegations of corruption in the Iraq Oil-for-Food program.

Spokeswoman Marie Okabe said Annan had asked former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker; Mark Pieth of Switzerland, an expert on money-laundering in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and Richard Goldstone of South Africa, former prosecutor for the international criminal tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, to serve.

"They have indicated that a Security Council resolution would be extremely helpful for the work of the inquiry," she said. "Council members are discussing the possibility of such a resolution."

Okabe said that no formal announcement would be made before the council decided on a resolution.

Late last month, in response to published allegations of mismanagement, Annan told the council of his intention to establish an independent, high-level inquiry into the matter.
