Greek Cypriots given aid warning

BRUSSELS, April 16 (UPI) -- Greek Cypriots have been warned they will receive none of the $2.4 billion pledged in aid if they vote against a United Nations peace plan.

Both Greek and Turkish sides of the eastern Mediterranean island vote on the U.N. plan in referendums April 24. Should one part of the island vote against the proposals, only Greek Cyprus will enter the European Union May 1 with nine other accession countries.

In a further attempt to warn Greek Cypriots of the damaging consequences should they reject the plan, the European Union and the United States said they would do everything possible to help the Turkish Cypriots, who are expected to vote yes, the Financial Times said Friday.

Thursday, the EU enlargement minister Gunter Verheugen bluntly told Greek Cypriots they would reap few benefits if they voted no.

"No agreement, no money," he said.

The Greek Cypriots are opposed to the U.N. plan because they are afraid Turkish Cypriots will renege, specifically on handing over territory.
