SANAA, Yemen, April 15 (UPI) -- Thousands of Yemenis Thursday protested violence in Iraq and the continuing U.S. occupation, reports said.
The protesters, including university and school students, crammed the Sanaa's main al-Tahrir Square, brandishing placards denouncing the foreign occupation of Iraq and calling for a Muslim holy war.
The demonstration, staged amid tight security measures, also condemned U.S. President George W. Bush's support of an Israeli plan to pull out of Gaza but to keep a number of settlements in the West Bank that calls for Palestinian refugees to be resettled in the remaining area rather than being allowed to return to Israel.
The protesters addressed a message to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urging him to halt violence in Iraq and secure the withdrawal of occupation forces.
