U.S. inspector looks into Treasury misuse

WASHINGTON, April 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Treasury said Tuesday it will conduct an inquiry to decide whether it's legal to use civil servants to analyze partisan election proposals.

The issue surrounds an analysis conducted by government workers in the Treasury Department on an economic plan offered by likely presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Kerry's campaign argues it was an example of President Bush using taxpayer money to help his campaign.

"The use of government employees to analyze John Kerry's economic plan is an illegal use of resources," campaign Manager Mary Beth Cahill said in a statement. "While we're pleased that the Treasury Department is launching an inquiry into this matter, the bigger question is why the president refuses to dedicate Treasury's resources to creating new jobs and opportunities for America."
