U.K. cops to LIbya over 1984 police murder

TRIPOLI, Libya, April 3 (UPI) -- U.K. detectives prepared to hunt for the murderer of a British policewoman killed by someone in Libya's embassy 20 years ago, the BBC reported Saturday.

Constable Yvonne Fletcher, 25, was shot dead by someone from inside Libya's London embassy compound but no one has ever been charged with her murder.

Last month's meeting between Prime Minister Tony Blair and Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi paved the way for a meeting between detectives and Libyan officials.

The four-man team of British detectives expects to interview suspects and embassy officials during their trip and hope to finally bring Fletcher's killer to justice.

At the time of her murder, she and other officers were policing a demonstration outside the Libyan "People's Bureau" in London.

Eleven demonstrators were also injured in the attack.
