Jordan refuses to register Ahmed Yassin

AMMAN, Jordan, March 30 (UPI) -- The Jordanian civil registration department reportedly refused to register a newborn named after slain Hamas founder and spiritual guide Sheik Ahmad Yassin.

The weekly al-Sabil, the mouthpiece of the Islamic Movement in Jordan, said Tuesday Ziad al-Nabulsi, a Jordanian citizen of Palestinian origin, could not register his son under the name of Ahmad Yassin in line with interior ministry instructions banning the registration of given names that have political implications.

Al-Nabulsi was quoted as saying after Israel's slaying of Yassin March 22, he decided to name his expected child Ahmad Yassin if it was a boy and Hamas if it was a girl.

Jordan last May banned the registration of given names such as Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden and Yitzhak Rabin.
