Britain may sign deals with Libya soon

LONDON, March 28 (UPI) -- British Trade Minister Mike O'Brien will visit Tripoli, Libya, in April, according to Britain's secretary of state for trade and industry.

Patricia Hewitt told GMTV's Sunday Program that Britain will be soon signing deals with Libya over oil, education, health and tourism.

After decades of diplomatic silence between Britain and the North African nation because of the Lockerbie bombing, murder of police Officer Yvonne Fletcher and supply of arms to the Irish Republican Army, diplomatic relations warmed quickly after Libya gave up its weapons of mass destruction, the BBC said.

"We know from our own history in Europe that countries that trade together don't generally fight against each other," said Hewitt. "(It's) better for our world and better for British security to have Libya co-operating with us."
