Tunisia postones Arab League summit

TUNIS, Tunisia, March 27 (UPI) -- Arab leaders were set to meet Monday for a two-day summit, but host Tunisia Saturday indefinitely postponed the meeting over what were called disagreements.

A Tunisian foreign ministry spokesman said the "disagreements" over issues to be discussed at the summit came up at a preliminary meeting of Arab foreign ministers over the past few days, the BBC said.

The issues included plans to relaunch a peace initiative to Israel, and proposals for reforms in the region.

Tunisia officials said the country regretted postponing a summit "on which Arab and international opinion has pinned great hopes."

The BBC reported there is a great deal of friction in the Arab League over plans for political reform in many Arab countries. The countries are coming under intense pressure from the United States to carry out the reforms.

The Tunisian foreign ministry admitted "the existence of difference of views" over issues "of great importance to the process of development, modernization and reform in our Arab countries."

As he left the preliminary meeting Saturday, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa told reporters, "No comment, no comment, no comment."
