Opposition to S. Korea's impeachment grows

SEOUL, March 27 (UPI) -- South Korea's bar association has called on the Constitutional Court to reject the impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun.

The association charged the National Assembly made serious procedural violations when it passed the impeachment motion on March 12, the Korea Times reported Saturday.

"The laws require the Assembly hold enough debates and discussions before deciding on a motion, but the manner it showed over the impeachment case was too abrupt," the association said in a statement submitted to the court.

The association's opinion reflected the position of the Justice Ministry, which said Wednesday the procedure involved in the legislature's impeachment of the head of state wasn't fair or legal, citing similar reasons.

The ministry said the impeachment decision has no legal justification because it lacks sufficient investigation and political debate, as stipulated in the laws.

The opinion from each party will be taken into account when the Constitutional Court reviews the impeachment case. The court is set to open its first hearing Tuesday.
