The food prize recognizes individual contributions to the efforts to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.

Each year, more than 4,000 institutions and organizations around the world are invited to nominate candidates for the prize.

The United States is also the world's leading food aid donor, which last year provided $2.4 billion for food aid programs around the world.

Last year, the United States also helped launch a G8 initiative to end famine and improve food security.
