BRIDGEPORT, Conn., March 26 (UPI) -- Connecticut officials have closed Interstate-95 in Bridgeport after a fuel truck exploded and melted two huge holes in the busy commuter thoroughfare.

No one was killed or seriously injured, officials said of the Thursday night accident, but the Friday morning commute for Bridgeport resident moved at a crawl, the Boston Herald reported.

The tanker truck crashed on an elevated section of the interstate just before 8:30 p.m. EST, hitting two cars.

The heavily traveled highway, which is used by some 130,000 vehicles daily, was shut down in both directions between Exits 25 and 26.

Motorists were detoured through local Bridgeport streets.

The road could remain closed for weeks until the two damaged sections are rebuilt, according to a state Department of Transportation spokesman.
