Stephen Hawking's wife questioned

CAMBRIDGE, England, March 25 (UPI) -- Professor Stephen Hawking's wife was questioned by British police about a series of alleged attacks on the scientist, the Daily Mirror reported Thursday.

Elaine Hawking spent about 50 minutes with Cambridge officers investigating claims by nursing staff that her 62-year-old husband, who suffers from motor neurone disease, has been assaulted on several occasions.

"We have spoken to Mrs. Hawking with her full agreement and our investigation continues. I would emphasize that she was not arrested," police said.

Hawking, who is hospitalized for a chest infection, has denied being a victim of domestic violence and has said he has no knowledge of being assaulted.
