Ralph Nader seeks access to Oregon ballot

PORTLAND, Ore., March 17 (UPI) -- Ralph Nader, running for president as an independent, seeks 1,000 registered voters to sign a petition April 5 to put him on Oregon's November ballot.

Nader plans to attend the April 5 petition signing event in Portland, the Oregonian reported Wednesday.

Election officials say this type of assembly, one of two ways an independent can get on the ballot, hasn't been successful in more than 10 years.

But Nader supporters are confident his appearance will draw more than enough qualified voters to the Roseland Theater.

"A lot of people come when Ralph speaks," said Greg Kafoury, who is running Nader's Oregon campaign. "We may as well use that to take care of the details of getting him on the ballot here."

Early national polls show at least 6 percent of voters support Nader in what could be a close race between President Bush and Sen. John Kerry, the likely Democratic nominee. A March 4 poll for the Oregonian showed Nader has 5 percent support in Oregon.
