Premier promises ethics index

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, March 15 (UPI) -- Malaysia's new prime minister, facing elections next Sunday, wants an ethics and performance index for all elected representatives.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Monday promised to set up the index to monitor the elected representatives' conduct and to ensure they serve the people.

In a radio interview, Abdullah, who has made ending graft one of his main campaign issues, said all elected representatives, including himself, would have their performances measured by an index based on monthly reports, Channel News Asia reported.

"The ethics are related to the personality of an elected representative, among others, to distance from corruption, have high integrity and good character," he told Radio ERA.

Abdullah has campaigned against corruption and for ethical governance.

He became prime minister four months ago after longtime leader, Mahathir Mohamad, retired and handed power to him.

The ruling coalition is widely expected to win its traditional two-thirds parliamentary majority in Sunday's general elections.
