Putin cruising to election victory

MOSCOW, March 13 (UPI) -- One by one across Russia's 11 time zones, election results came in Sunday showing incumbent President Vladimir Putin's only worry is voter apathy.

There must be at least 50 percent turnout for the results to be valid and in the northernmost Chukotka-Schmidtovsky region, turnout was just 51.45 percent, Tass news service reported.

Putin and the other five candidates are voting in Moscow. First Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, is also being watched closely by Russian TV cameras as he casts his vote.

Late Sunday polling stations will close in Russia's westernmost region of Kaliningrad, about 24 hours after the first polling places opened in the east, in Kamchatka.

Russia's Central Election Commission expects to have 90 percent of the results available to report late Sunday.

Putin is expected to be the overwhelming winner.
