Kerry promises middle America tax breaks

WASHINGTON, March 10 (UPI) -- Democratic front-runner U.S. Sen. John Kerry Wednesday told the AFL-CIO Executive Council Meeting he would provide tax relief to America's middle class.

"I intend to return tax fairness to America," Kerry said. "With George Bush's tax cuts, the top 1 percent of taxpayers have received almost 40 percent of the breaks. Meanwhile middle-class working people have seen their share of the tax burden go up, not down."

Kerry made his comments via satellite Wednesday from Chicago, where he attended a meet-and-greet event with workers at Hill Mechanical Group. Tuesday night Kerry had celebrated his victories in four contests to decide the Democratic presidential nominee.

In his comments Kerry said he intended to give middle class Americans new tax breaks, including tax credits to pay for healthcare and college tuition and a $50 billion State Education and Tax Relief Fund designed to help states provide tax relief for state, local and property taxes.
