Wash. state split over same-sex marriage

TACOMA, Wash., March 9 (UPI) -- The battle over same-sex marriage has erupted on multiple fronts across Washington, the Tacoma Tribune reported Tuesday.

In Seattle, six same-sex couples sued King County for refusing to issue them marriage licenses, and Mayor Greg Nickels announced the city would recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere.

In Olympia, state lawmakers vowed to step up the fight in the Legislature and on the campaign trail for gay and lesbian rights.

In Pierce County, gay and lesbian leaders planned a meeting in Tacoma to discuss ways to bring legal or political pressure to advance the effort.

"A lot of people are no longer scared about speaking frankly about marriage and about the rights and benefits that come with it," said Jamie Pedersen, a lawyer representing the six couples in Seattle.
