CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., March 9 (UPI) -- A Marine sergeant was being held in Kuwait Tuesday as a suspect in a homicide that occurred just before he shipped out from Camp Pendleton.
Gunnery Sgt. Archie O'Neil of the 1st Marine Regiment was identified as a suspect in the Feb. 29 shooting death of Kimberly O'Neal in a park on the sprawling Southern California military base.
O'Neil and the 39-year-old victim were not related. He deployed to the Middle East with his unit the day after the shooting.
The Marines said no formal charges had been filed and no further details about either the homicide or the investigation were being released. O'Neil will be brought back to Pendleton for questioning.
