Ohio TV station sues to make mayor talk

CLEVELAND, March 6 (UPI) -- A Cleveland television station that went to court in a failed bid to force the major to talk to its reporters is going to try again.

U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver declined Thursday to issue a temporary restraining order that WOIO-TV had sought in its continuing conflict with Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell.

The station sued Campbell, claiming she violated the First Amendment by refusing to deal with the station's reporters.

But the judge, in ruling against the TV station, wrote, "Government officials do have a First Amendment right not to speak with members of the media they deem particularly untrustworthy or irresponsible."

The station says it will appeal the ruling, the Akron Beacon Journal reported Saturday.

"We believe WOIO will prevail in the end," said Eric Hellerman, the station's lawyer.

The TV station claims Campbell prohibited city workers from releasing information to WOIO after the station telecast a story about police officers who collected $84,000 in overtime while driving the mayor's children to shopping malls and escorting them on trips.

Campbell said because her family has received death threats, the added police security is needed.
