Little at stake Tuesday for Florida Dems

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., March 5 (UPI) -- With little at stake for the Democrats in Tuesday's primary, Florida hopes to prove to the nation it has learned how to hold an election.

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has locked up the nomination with his near sweep on Super Tuesday earlier this week and Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, his main challenger, has dropped out.

"It is a good warm-up for November for us," Democratic Party Chairman Scott Maddox said Friday. "We're going to have poll watchers and watching parties as a way to prepare ourselves."

Just about all of the old gang of nine candidates are still on the ballot but only Kerry, Al Sharpton and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio are still actively campaigning.

Kerry is a lock for a landslide even if turnout is way down, and that will help the efforts to conduct a smooth election.
