Richard Speck's Chicago home burned

CHICAGO, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Chicago firefighters struggled Wednesday to put out an extra-alarm fire in one of the city's most infamous buildings.

The structure, that has been home to residents and retail outlets, once housed mass-murderer Richard Speck before he killed eight student nurses in 1966, WBBM-AM reported.

People were living in the building on the city's Southeast Side on both the first and second floors when the fire began, but all got out safely, officials said.

The wood frame, brick front building recently housed a neighborhood grocery on the first floor.

The fire was reported at 5 a.m. CST, according to a fire dispatcher.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
