Indonesian Muslim gets jail sentence

JAKARTA, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Abu Rusdan, an alleged Indonesian leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, was sentenced Wednesday in Jakarta to 42 months in prison for aiding suspected terrorists.

The court found Rusdan, 53, guilty of hiding suspected terrorists and of failing to report an act of terror. Rusdan, an Afghan-trained Muslim militant, was also found guilty of holding a series of meetings attended by members of the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group.

Rusdan, also known by the alias Hamzah, met with Ali Ghufron, alias Mukhlas, one of the men convicted in the October 2002 bombing of two Bali nightclubs, the court said.

Government prosecutors alleged Rusdan was elected the terror group's chief in April 2002, to replace Abu Bakar Baasyir, who is currently serving a three-year jail sentence on charges of violating immigration laws.
