Graham calls reaction to Haiti indifferent

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., says the Bush administration's response to the turmoil in Haiti is impotent and retarded, the Palm Beach Post reported Wednesday.

Graham said in a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday Haiti faces a potential overthrow of a democratic government along with a humanitarian crisis.

Despite the impending disaster, Graham said, "the Bush administration has taken a firm stance on the side of indifference."

"As we have seen repeatedly over the past two decades, one of the impacts of this catastrophe will almost certainly be a dramatic increase in the number of refugees risking their lives in leaky and unsafe boats to try to escape the violence," Graham said.

Gov. Jeb Bush, President Bush's brother, countered he thinks the White House is doing the right thing by asking for help from other neighbors in the region.
