Amman seeks liberation of Syria prisoners

AMMAN, Jordan, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Jordan said Wednesday it will seek the liberation of hundreds of Jordanian prisoners in Syria since relations between the two countries have improved.

Jamal Mansour, head of the parliament's freedoms' committee, told UPI he will be raising the case of the Jordanian prisoners with Syrian members of parliament at a meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Union in Damascus next month.

He said the committee has a list of 300 Jordanians imprisoned in Syria, without mentioning the reasons for which they have been detained.

Syria released a small number of Jordanian prisoners four years ago as a sign of improvement in relations following the advent to the throne of King Abdullah II in Jordan and the rise to power of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who succeeded his late father, Hafez Assad.

Amman claims as many as 500 Jordanians are held in Syria but Syria says it has only 65 Jordanian prisoners.
