Yemen, Egypt discuss Iraq, ME

CAIRO, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh and Egypt's Hosni Mubarak Monday discussed increased violence in the Palestinian territories and Iraq at meetings in Cairo.

Egyptian sources said the two presidents held a first round of talks devoted to discussing the Palestinians and preparations for the next Arab summit to be held in Tunisia next month amid deep inter-Arab divisions over how to deal with the situation in Iraq.

The two heads of state also plan to discuss security cooperation between their two countries, including efforts to combat terrorism and the fate of Egyptian prisoners held in Yemen on charges of belonging to Muslim extremist organizations.

Economic issues also figure on the talks' agenda, especially the volume of trade between Yemen and Egypt which dropped to $50 million in 2003 from $198 million in 2002.
